The Scientific Boating Safety Association (SBSA) is committed to fostering safe and skilled scientific boaters through education, research and the advancement of scientific boating standards, certifications and operations.
Student Training Awards are intended to lower financial barriers for Members seeking to obtain nationally and state recognized watercraft safety courses or diversify their own safety education and credentials. Examples of courses and credentials include:
Motorboat Operator’s Training Course (MOTC)/Motorboat Operator’s Certification Course (MOCC) and specific modules (e.g. Open Water, River, Airboat, Surf Ops, Live Boating)
USCG Merchant Mariner Credential courses
First Responder, First Aid, CPR, AED, O2 Administration
Paddlecraft safety courses (e.g. American Canoe Association, Boy Scouts America, etc.)
State specific boating safety courses / NASBLA courses
National Safe Boating Council courses
US Sailing or US Powerboating safety courses
Private seamanship school courses
SBSA offers up to four $500 training awards annually.
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be an Individual Member of SBSA or affiliated with an Organizational Member. Non-members may join here.
Must require scientific boating as part of their career or education.
Must meet prerequisites for desired instructor credential.
Must submit a completed application.

Include details about the desired course, dates and location if known. Submit your application using the Google Form below. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application.
Application Periods:
There are two application deadlines each year: April 1st and September 1st.
