Presidents Message
SBSA Update, March 25, 2009
It is time for another non- periodic update from your favorite scientific boating safety association. This is the first note since Steve sent out the minutes of our meeting in Long Beach on January 7. In keeping with a resolution passed at the meeting this update is only going to member organization reps, and not the whole damn mail list. It is also hoped this will show up on the website at some point (after edits). More on that later. So if you see somebody who should be here, but is not in the “To:” list above, let me know.
SBSA thanks Kim Anthony for her hard work & time hosting the meeting. All Kim got from the SBSA President were vague guesses at dates, number attending and an agenda. And yet she put on a great meeting – while changing jobs! Thanks again to Kim. Kim is also hosting a MOTC June 24-26 @ CSULB. She may need instructors. If you want to pass along your knowledge contact Kim.
The results of the election were that Steve Clabuesch & Henry Fastenau will continue as Secretary/Treasurer & President. The next election is to be held in October this year, and will be for the Vice President & a Director. It is hoped that membership will take a more active role in the next election.
The OM representatives present gave short verbal summaries of their home institution boating activities. Written or electronic versions of these reports are to be sent to Steve Clabuesch. SBSA understands that for many institutions a reliable method of collecting boating activity has not been set up yet. All those of us in this position can do is provide best guess estimates. But some record of who, what, where we support boating is important, and may be more so in the future.
The first section in the Operations Manual has been sent to the webmasters for posting. John Douglas sent in a excellent guideline for liveboating divers. Additional sections being worked on (I’m told) include kayak & other human-powered vessels, launching by crane, working around offshore structures & crew overboard/lost diver. We look forward to seeing those additions soon. If you have ideas for operations chapters and/or training classes to be held please send them to me.
Since Kim Anthony has moved on to a real job, we have asked David Bell to act as co-webmaster. Kim & David promise changes, new buttons, and an expanded website soon.
Eddie Kisfaludy, SIO, made up a professional quality brochure extolling the benefits of SBSA membership. Original versions of the brochure were taken back to the AAUS meeting held in Atlanta earlier this month where they generated much discussion. Hopefully, new members may be joining soon.
Speaking of membership, OM dues of $50 will be due July 1 this year. Start saving those quarters now. This year when your membership check clears you will be sent a cool treat. (While supplies last, or if I don’t keep them all for myself)
There’s a couple jobs out there. If you haven’t seen the notices check with Kim Anthony and Steve Clabuesch.
Happy Boating
